Cyber-Criminal

In today’s digital world, cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated, often posing as trusted companies like Microsoft to trick you into giving up personal information. These scams, known as impersonation scams, are designed to gain access to your computer and steal sensitive data, sometimes leading to financial loss.

How These Scams Work

There are two common methods used by scammers:

  • Direct Approach: You receive a call from someone claiming to be a representative from a well-known company, like Microsoft, telling you there’s an urgent issue with your computer. They ask for remote access, and once granted, they can steal your data.
  • Indirect Approach: While browsing or downloading software, you’re directed to a fake website where you’re asked to enter personal details. Soon after, you’re contacted by someone claiming to be the software provider, again requesting remote access.

Recent Cybersecurity Threats: The Outlook Vulnerability

A newly discovered vulnerability in Microsoft Outlook, identified as MonikerLink (CVE-2024-21413), allows hackers to execute malicious code with just one click. This vulnerability makes impersonation scams even more dangerous, emphasising the need for vigilance and regular software updates.

Protecting Yourself from Cybercrime

  • Never allow remote access: Only give remote access to trusted individuals or companies that you’ve verified.
  • Verify the source: Before sharing any personal or financial information, ensure that the request is legitimate.
  • Stay updated: Regularly update your software to protect against known vulnerabilities.
  • Educate yourself: Learn about common scams and share this knowledge with others to prevent attacks.
  • Use a VPN: A VPN adds an extra layer of security when you’re online.

If you suspect that your data has been compromised, change your passwords immediately and contact a cybersecurity professional like Pro Computer Repairs to check your system.
