Fast Keyboard and Palm Rest Replacement

Keys that stick, repeat themselves or have stopped working altogether. Palm rests that have cracked, lifted, or taken the damage from a drop.

Both are common on consumer laptops, and both are straightforward to put right. We work on all major brands at our Mitchelton workshop, and by mail-in from anywhere in Australia.

Keyboard replacement is $210 labour plus the part. Palm rest replacement is $210 labour plus the part.

Signs Your Keyboard Needs Replacing

Keyboard faults usually creep in rather than arrive all at once. The common ones we see:

  • Keys that stick, repeat themselves, or do nothing at all
  • A whole section of the keyboard that has stopped responding
  • A liquid spill, even if it dried out and seemed fine at the time
  • Keys that have come off and will not clip back on
  • Letters worn off the keys you use most

Bring it in and we will test it first. If the fault turns out to be something other than the keyboard, we will tell you before we order a part.

Palm Rest Replacement

The palm rest is the upper casing your hands sit on, and on most laptops it carries the keyboard and trackpad as well. It needs replacing when you see:

  • Cracks around the trackpad or along the front edge
  • The upper casing lifting or separating from the base
  • Flex or creaking when you rest your hands on it
  • Damage from a drop that left the screen intact

Why the Two Jobs Often Go Together

On most laptops the keyboard is not a separate part you can simply unplug. It is riveted or clipped into the palm rest assembly, so the upper casing has to come off either way.

If you need both, we fit them in the one job rather than charging you twice for the same strip-down. If you only need one, that is what you pay for.

What to Expect

  • Turnaround is 2-4 business days when parts are in stock in Australia. If a part has to be ordered in from overseas, we confirm the timeframe before you go ahead.
  • Every repair carries our 30-day satisfaction guarantee on labour. Parts we supply carry the supplier’s warranty, which we confirm on your quote. Full terms are on our warranty page.
  • Already bought the part? Bring it in and we will fit it for the labour price above. We cannot warrant a part we did not supply, and if it is wrong for your model we will tell you rather than force it.
  • We replace keyboards and palm rests on Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo laptops, along with MSI and most other consumer brands.

Liquid Spills

Spills are one of the most common reasons a keyboard needs replacing. Liquid gets under the keys and corrodes the membrane underneath,
which is why a keyboard can work for a few days after a spill and then start failing.

Bring it in sooner rather than later. We check whether the spill reached the motherboard before we quote, because that changes the job.

How to Make a Keyboard Last

  • Keep drinks off the same surface as the laptop.
  • After a spill, shut the laptop down, unplug it and turn it upside down. Do not try to dry it out with heat.
  • Have the inside cleaned every so often. Crumbs and dust under the keys cause sticking long before anything fails.
  • Lift the lid from the middle of the edge rather than a corner, which puts less twist through the palm rest.

Laptop Keyboard and Palm Rest FAQs

  • How much does it cost to replace a laptop keyboard?

Labour is $210. The keyboard itself is quoted separately once we have your make and model, because prices vary a lot between brands. Send us your model and we will give you the full figure before you commit to anything.

  • Can you replace just the keyboard, or do I need the whole palm rest?

It depends on the laptop. On many models the keyboard is riveted into the palm rest and the two come out as one assembly, so the upper casing has to come off either way. We check your model before quoting and tell you which job it actually is.

  • My laptop had a liquid spill. Is the keyboard still fixable?

Usually, yes. The keyboard is a replaceable part. What matters is whether the liquid reached the motherboard, which we check before we quote. Bring it in sooner rather than later, because corrosion gets worse the longer it sits.

  • How long does a keyboard replacement take?

Turnaround is 2-4 business days when parts are in stock in Australia. If the part has to be ordered in from overseas, we confirm the timeframe with you before you go ahead.

  • Can I supply my own keyboard or palm rest?

Yes. Bring the part in and we will fit it for the labour price. Two things to know: we cannot warrant a part we did not supply, and if it turns out to be wrong for your model we will tell you before going any further rather than force it.

  • Is it worth replacing the keyboard on an older laptop?

If the laptop is otherwise running well, usually yes, because a keyboard replacement costs a lot less than a new machine. If we think the laptop is not worth the spend, we will say so rather than take the job.
